Description
The Chapel Perilous waits in the Lower Ward of Sigil. Several stories of a blasted alabaster dome are stricken black with the filth of the Lower Ward and soot-fall from the neighboring Factory District. The roof has be shattered allowing the soot-fall to blanket the inside of the building as well. Much like a classic amphitheater in appearance, the main room is tiered with ancient stone seating steps descending to a large, faceless, statue presiding over an enormous stone alter. At the base of the statue and alter is dark pool of still water. Colossal sections of the colapsed ceiling litter the steps. Several large rooms are sectioned off from the main room. Most of these rooms are empty and covered in dust. It is not known how the Eschaton utilize the broken temple as a headquarters.
Testimonial
It rises out of its surroundings like an enormous broken egg blistering out of the ground. Not many know what the inside looks like because it's considered damned and not a berk Spireward of barmy will go near the blasted thing. But I know that it's vacant and desolate. The cloistered rooms are all exposed, blown open. The stone that made steps and seats for the masses remain in clustered chunks rising up the walls. Where the altar of any other Power's House would be is just a dark pool of water. And above that a faceless, cloaked statue that seems to peel off the most wicked stitch any cutter could ever try to imagine!
No one will take a stroll near the place; none save those blighted Eschaton. They keep on that place like flies on offal. Don't know how you could brave to be in it with the smell of the wicked tanneries around it! Powers be!! What a stench! Acrid choke! A malicious waft blankets that broken hole! Blech! But, by the hells it might be keeping us from smelling something else. This is the place where any berk worth his meat in the thick walk of the ward knows that things bearing terror and blighted futures shit and spew out from this hole.
The Quick-swords talk about a Godstone preserved within the faceless statue in the middle of the old amphitheater of the temple. Its power is supposed to represent worship or zealotry or some such nonsense, but why any sod would get near that thing is beyond me. Listen, it's just somewhat common these days to hear crazy fodder coming from that place. Lights, chanting, it ain't natural even for the Cage but what is these days?
History of the Chapel
The first significant recorded mention of the Chapel Perilous dates back to far before Hashkar's Reign and the modern calendar. The Chapel Perilous contains a gateway that connects Sigil to the Dome of the First Portal on Lunia of Mt. Celestia. This ancient gateway is apparently the first portal that was ever discovered between Celestia and Sigil.
The next significant mention of the chapel is of Sougad Lawshredder's capture by the first Lawshredder Investigation Team. Though it may be assumed that Lawshredder was committing or attempting his 11th murder at the chapel, that is unverified.
Property Rights
The chapel next rose to prominence nearly 600 years later when several factions became embroiled in a dispute over rights to the property. Although the reasonings for this property dispute were never made entirely clear, it has often been assumed that each faction had various reasons, not the least of which involved attempting to obtain that which their rival faction sought. At least two factions, the Athar and the Sign of One, secretly sought the chapel because of rumors of great artifacts and untapped power within. As violence over access to the property increased between the two factions and their allies, Factol Sarin of the Harmonium seized the deed to the property to avert a Faction War. Upon Sarin's assassination, however, the deed passed to Lannister, a mysterious individual who used the property to establish the fledging Eschaton. Although it is likely that Sarin intended the Chapel Perilous to pass to the Lannister Family, protectors of Lunia and the Dome of the First Portal, it instead passed to Valiant Lannister the future factol of both the Eschaton and the Harmonium.
Events
Testimonials of a series of important events that occurred at the Chapel accompanied by the actual facts of the affair:
- The Hallow Shot - Events have come & gone though that ruin. There was a time where what some of the berks, with ears to the high walls, have called "The Hallow Shot" occurred not too long ago. A witness will say that there was a sound of a small cannon firing and, don't ask me how I've come to know this, but something hit that dread statue in the temple. The next day . . . that next day, almost every high priest in Sigil got their signature in the Dead Book.
Atticus and the Cannon - Attempting to destroy the Godstone within, Atticus directed a cannon-blast through the hollow roof of the chapel. After it struck, a reverberation of palpable energy spread throughout the city. This "zealous" energy somehow interacted with most of the high priests in Sigil causing them to die under various different and often bizarre circumstances (See Episode: Rise of the Eschaton).
- Angel to the Rescue - Another "time of note" that might concern you was a year or two back. Protect-my-heart-from-the-Lady if I'm lying, but I'll tell you that half the Cutters that hangout at that "place", can't name it, but it's a bit West o' hear, came rushing past into that Temple. Not but a Marilith's quif after that an angel flew into that terrible place. No doubt to deliver our Lady's Justice because some kind of ground shaking quake happened thereafter. Bless the Hardheads when they do some good.
An Eschaton Ambush - In reality, Harmonium tracker Valiant led the Azrai into the chapel after rumors of Eschaton, Lawshredder, and the Oldest Barmy. Unfortunately it was a clever trap designed to catch the Azrai unawares. In the end, Valiant and his minions were defeated, but not before Valiant nearly cracked the very foundation of the place with powerful earth-shaking magic (See Episode: Rise of the Eschaton).
