Ayuh, Pheodora Chakravanti, Dame Morta, "City Coroner", I got the chant on that bird. Remember seein' her long before her winin' and dinin' with the High-Ups in the Lady's ward. Weren't too long ago, she lived - if yeh can call it that - night and day down in the guts of the Mortuary. Little more'n a grum Gypsy with a deep purse and a bone box fulla questions yeh can't answer. Paid quality jink for any interesting deader yeh brung her. Some bubber over at Sark's says he made his fortune off'n her unique tastes during the outbreak of Carceric Rot back in '42. 'Course Sark's made his fortune off'n his unique tastes, so take that addle-brain's chant for what it's worth.

You heard right, '42. That's what they say. Dunno how she maintains her considerable charms, but wouldn't mind bobbin a bit for the missus. Ain't a collector kickin' what ken a time she weren't around. An institution, that blood, but a rube all the same. Dunno where she's from, but it ain't here, I can tell you that.

But them times long past now. Still calls kip in the Deadhouse, but she's been working on somethin'. She cleared out Carrion's collectors; makes proclamations, declarations, what-have-you; comes and goes more frequently, more secretly. She's always been well-lanned 'mong the Dusties, but now she's tuggin on them strings, seein' what'll hold. Mark and warrant, if the Dead are up to somethin', she's at the heart of it.

History with the Azrai

Pheodora first met the Azrai in their capacity as the Lawshredder Investigation Team(See: Episode: The Fang of Sigil). At the time, she was a cloistered but highly proficient undertaker, necromancer and pathologist. She was recruited to perform necropsies on Lawshredder's victims. She became more closely allied with the LIT when during the post-mortem viewing of Fassa Abalon's body, her laboratory was infiltrated by a number of spider-dragon creatures. She then agreed to help the Azrai treat their friend Tripicus, who was suffering from advanced Silverweed toxicity. She used her significant charms to acquire the services of a Korachon Baatezu, which assisted in alleviating some of the mental symptoms of the Silverweed poisoning.

She continued to assist the Azrai in their investigation of Silverweed and its ingredients. She was also instrumental in developing an effective treatment to both the physical and ephemeral symptoms of Silverweed poisoning. She has stated that the original source of her interest in Silverweed was its similarity to a plague which decimated her homeland of Barovia.

She has also become somewhat of an intelligence gathering agent for the Azrai through her interactions with Noshteroth and his associates in the Meridian Group. These relationships seemed to have survived the goings on in the Archives of Arendur.

Pheodora Missing

Pheodora went missing some time during 635 HR, and was believed to be dead. A note set up to be sent to Jason upon her failing to check-in indicated that she had reason to believe that if Jason was receiving this letter that she was dead. The letter contained instructions to retrieve a large quantity of her blood and one dose of Crimsonweed.

Further evidence of her demise was discovered in the Harmonium vault when what appeared to be her mask was discovered. Oddly, the container it was stored in had not been opened for hundreds of years, and the mask was heavily damaged. Accompanying the mask were disturbing passages left which referenced the torture of a woman. Investigating these passages upon the belief that they may lead to Pheodora is what led the Azrai into the fourth door.

Evidence indicates that Pheodora did travel back through the fourth door, possibly re-entering the timestream at a point much earlier than the rest of the Azrai did. This is supported by the evidence which seems to point to her being able to engineer Mist Sickness. However, before traveling back through the door, the Azrai believed they witnessed Pheodora being sacrificed.

Upon traveling through the Third Door again, the Azrai confirmed that Pheodora was killed at the Chapel Perilous in 32 HR. However, Dr. Karvassi believed that her consciousness fragmented and shards of her essence lodged themselves within women throughout Sigil, women with whom she shared a connection through Mist Sickness as well as a hair color. This could either be the cause of the phenomenon identified as Mantle Theory, or simply an additional effect of it.

Phelazar

Over a year after her disappearance, the Azrai and Eliath were able to re-enter the mysterious plane containing Barovia and Strahd's Castle, believing her to be there based on indications from the Protean Map.

Once there, they learned that after her death in 32 HR, Pheodora negotiated an addendum to the Concord, creating an opportunity for her to escape at some point in the distant future. By coming after her, the Azrai helped to fulfill the conditions of the Lady's Petition. However, they found an individual seeming to be some part of the mind of Pheodora trapped within the body of Malazar the Desecrated. It is not clear at this time how closely entwined these beings are.

Notable Traits

  • The only individual who has displayed an ability to see the palindromic symbols.
  • Her blood is one ingredient in the treatment for Silverweed poisoning.
  • In one instance, sexual intercourse with her relieved the subject of some traces of Silverweed poisoning.
  • Her blood has caused Razorvine to bloom.
  • During a long period of sleeplessness, she frequently plunged into dementia, and suffered numerous and severe self-inflicted wounds.
  • Dreamed of Raak-Po before ever seeing it.
    • Woke from said dream in possession of a bloody silk scarf present in the dream, which she immediately and regrettably cleaned.
  • Mysteriously came into possession of a black, metallic mask with a single red tear dripping from one eye. The mask screws into the wearer's face and grants her heightened divinatory and necromantic powers.
  • Able to hear a single word from Lawshredder Victims when Speak With Dead is cast on their bodies. The only other individual known to be able to perform this feat was Valiant. This ability only works when Pheodora is the first person to cast the spell.
  • Once seemingly contacted The Lady of Pain during an attempt to commune with her God.
  • Was able to locate and identify the presence of a soul which was treated with Crimsonweed after the subject had been ritually murdered by Lawshredder and absorbed into a Godstone.
  • Introduced the "Chain of Vengeance" theory of the Lawshredder murders which is totally the right theory.
  • Possibly dead. =(
  • Is the 11th victim in the first string of Lawshredder murders.
  • Possibly traveled back in time and developed and released a disease that killed roughly ten thousand times as many people as Lawshredder has.

Equipment

Pheodora carried a number of unique items she employed in her research.

Silverweed Testing Kit

Developed during her initial research on the harmful drug, the kit is able to identify the degree of toxicity present in an individual's blood. When combined with her own divinatory powers, she is able to determine the relative degree of sparkskew afflicting the subject.

The Mask

Although she only recently revealed its existence to the rest of the Azrai, she mysteriously came into possession of a black metallic mask shortly following the TimeReaver ritual, during a period where she was afflicted with pathological insomnia and frequent delusions. The mask covers the upper half of the wearer's face. Crafted of a heavy, cold, jet-black metal, it is featureless aside from a single red tear dripping from one eye and four long, jagged screws which protrude from around its edge. To use the mask, a wearer must turn these screws until they bite into the flesh and bone of her face. Once so mounted, it provides enhanced divinatory and necromantic abilities, but at a cost to the wearer. Only Atticus has attempted to use the mask with mixed results. Since it was discovered beneath the Harmonium Vault, it is in the possession of either Atticus or Otto.

The members of The Sept refer to it as "The Mask of the Seventh Sorrow" or, alternately "The Mask of Her Seventh Sorrow". The precise origin and meaning of this term is uncertain.

The Mimir

Having inherited Derioch's possessions following her demise, Pheodora immediately began exploring the contents of the Mimir Derioch had carried for centuries. It was later identified as Mimir 004-A, and was likely the first successful prototype completed by Grundelthum. Not long after Pheodora's disappearance, Descartes followed up on Otto's attempts to retrieve some of Pheodora's work from her lab. It was 10 long months later when Factor Travant finally invited Descartes to the Mortuary and led him not to Phe's lab, but quickly and somewhat nervously to a lower embalming chamber. There Descartes retrieved eight doses of Crimsonweed, Pheodora's mimir, and a grotesquely twisted, desiccated body. The corpse's personal effects marked him as an Eschaton scientist named Dr. Karson Jennings. No further information was obtained about the body, though it was preserved "just in case". Notes from Pheodora's mimir were accessed and can be found here. There is an additional level of information protected by voice activation that apparently only Atticus can activate that can now be found here.
